Gardeners, walkers, householders, farmers and people out and about are often the first to spot unusual insects or nest activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do contact the coordinator first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do include a photo if possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do keep a safe distance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not swat, trap or disturb a suspected hornet or wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overall appearance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mainly dark body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Velvety dark brown or black thorax.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoky wings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Single broad yellow or orange band towards the rear of the abdomen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-light-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legs and head<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Legs look dark with yellow ends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head appears darker from above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Face appears more orange from the front.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Queens can be up to about 30 mm; workers up to about 25 confusion species<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Native European hornet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large hoverflies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other wasp mimics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If in doubt, report it matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The yellow-legged hornet is an invasive non-native predator of insects, including honey bees and other pollinators.
